TBA – Coronado Hall

1/2 Day, Sat Oct 6, 1pm                    $60                              Max Students:  12

Skill Level:  Advanced beginner

- should be comfortable with the basics of knitting, purling, casting on/off & how to join for work in the round.  Some experience with color knitting would be helpful.

Description:  Steeking is a technique devised by traditional and ethnic knitters. Steeks provide ways to form openings in fabric that is worked in the round: openings for armholes, necklines, cardigan fronts, and so on.  They do involve cutting your hand knitted fabric! This class will quickly ease you past the obstacle of snipping your stitches and then give you practical experience in where and how to use steeks. We'll be knitting swatches and cutting them in this class.

Materials Fee:  Handouts will be provided.

Students Bring:  Worsted or heavy-worsted yarn, 6 to 8 ounces. Scraps are perfect: you will be making samples, and you will be cutting your work! The yarn should produce a nice-feeling stockinette (definitely not too loose, and preferably not board-like) at about 4 to 5 stitches per inch. At least two colors, unless you plan to work the samples in one color.  One 16-inch circular needle, size 7 or 8 U.S.  Set of double-pointed needles, in the same size as the circular needle.   Crochet hook in a size slightly smaller than your knitting needles.  Stitch markers.  Sewing needle, thread, and scissors.

- CLOSED -Two-Handed Stranded Knitting (Fair Isle Fundamentals) - CLOSED

Instructor:  Suzann Thompson

Los Angelitos Room, Coronado Hall

1/2 Day, Sat Oct 6, 1pm                    $60                              Max Students:  12

Skill Level:  Advanced beginner – basic knitting skills

Descripton:  Yes, you can do Fair Isle!  From reading charts to finished sample, learn to strand two colors successfully, holding one yarn in each hand.   Stranded color knitting, also known as Fair Isle, is gorgeous and anyone can learn to do it.  A general discussion of traditional Fair Isle knitting and other stranded color knitting is followed by learning to interpret color knitting charts.  We will knit on straight needles, because we are primarily interested in the technique of color stranding for the knit side and the purl side.  After a quick, "other hand knitting" practice session, you will learn to do stranded knitting with one color in one hand and the other color in the other hand.  You'll be glad you did.

Materials Fee:  None

Students Bring:  Leftover worsted weight or dk weight yarn in at least two contrasting colors (so you can see the stitches well).. Wool, wool-blends or other resilient yarns are best.  Knitting needles to give a relaxed gauge (not sloppy, not too tight) with chosen yarn.  Optional:  stitch holders in case you wish to save a swatch to finish later.  Tapestry needle, scissors.
